A Guide to Green Burial
A green burial requires an eco-friendly coffin or shroud composed of bio-degradable materials. After the burial the grave will become an integral part of the woodland so no visible signs of identification such as headstones or mementos are permitted. The site will primarily be managed for the benefit of wildlife and the Findhorn Hinterland Group, as land managers, will have the authority and responsibility to carry out selection, planting, managing and maintenance of the trees in the woodland.
Reference markers will locate the position of the graves which will also be recorded on a site map. To create a record of those buried, a People’s History Book is available for relatives to contribute a short history of the deceased which could include photos, poems, tributes etc and the reason for choosing to be buried in this special place.
The simplicity and beauty of a green burial can be combined with whatever type of arrangements preferred which reflect the wishes and character of the person concerned. Help in the form of contacts for suppliers of eco-coffins, inter-faith minister/celebrant, horse drawn transport of coffin etc can be provided.
We wish to offer a reasonable and sustainable service with costs comparable to Moray Council standard rates. It is important to note that, in line with the green ethos of this project, payments will be used for conservation and regeneration of the burial area and surrounding land. Burial lairs can be reserved in advance.
